One Year Training Program in Narrative Therapy and Community Work
This is an immersive year-long program. It consists of a Level One and a Level Two Intensive (one in February and another in November). In between these two teaching blocks, participants will be engaged in a reading/writing program relating the ideas of narrative practice to their own contexts and staying connected with each other online. In 2023, those who successfully complete an optional extra certification module will be eligible for recognition of prior learning for one subject of the Master of Narrative Therapy and Community Work.
During the pandemic, we’ve been genuinely surprised that hosting this program online hasn’t in anyway diminished the quality of participants’ projects nor the degree of skill development. This has been reassuring to us.
In 2023, we’re pleased to announce that we will offer options for the teaching blocks of this program. You can choose to attend the first teaching block face-to-face in Adelaide OR online.
The second teaching block will take place online.

PLEASE NOTE: Our online Level One and Level Two Intensives are live events, held in an Adelaide, South Australia timezone. It is expected that participants are fully available during the times of these workshops, so it is worth checking the time difference prior to registering.

Level One Intensive:
This one week workshop has been specifically designed for those who are relatively new to narrative ways of working or those who have had some exposure to the ideas and would now like the opportunity to more rigorously engage with narrative practices. This course will feature a review of key narrative ideas and practices, including recent developments. For this week, participants will join a larger group who are completing this course outside of the One Year Training Program, however a small group meeting is organised to introduce participants to each other and meet the tutors for this course.
Level Two Intensive:
This one week training program will extend participants’ knowledge and skills of narrative therapy. This skill-building workshop will be tailored to the interests and contexts of group members. Teaching methods will include: reviewing videotapes; engaging together in interviews; exercises designed to practice skills and
engage more fully in the narrative worldview. For this week, participants will join a larger group.
Online learning component:
In between these two teaching blocks, participants will be engaged in a reading/writing program relating the ideas of narrative practice to their own contexts and will be staying connected with each other online in a number of ways. These include:
- Participants regularly attending (at least once a month) Dulwich Centre online Meet the Author Sessions, which take place every Tuesday
- Participants attending a monthly Zoom catch up with other students and a Dulwich Centre faculty member
- Participating in online discussions via the course forum or Facebook
As part of the online learning component, participants will submit short written reflections on each topic, and will receive feedback from the tutor about these. These reflections will draw from your experiences working with narrative ideas in your context, so it is necessary to be working (paid or unpaid) in a context where you can put the ideas into practice throughout the program for at least 1 hour per week.
Certification Module:
In 2023, those who successfully complete an optional extra certification module in the One Year Training Program will then be eligible for recognition of prior learning for one subject of the Master of Narrative Therapy and Community Work (run in partnership between Dulwich Centre and University of Melbourne). This certification module involves:
- Participants recording two sessions of their work, transcribing 15 minutes of the interview, analysing it, sharing this and receiving supervision about it.
- Writing a 5000 word project about how you have used narrative practice in your work over the year. The aim of this project is to support practitioners to be able to use narrative practices in their own context and in their own ways.
- Completing a practice diary indicating you have put the ideas into practice within your own context throughout the course. You will need to be working in a context which you are able to put narrative ideas into practice for at least 5 hours per week. This can be in a paid or unpaid capacity, and with individuals, families, groups or communities. It does not have to be face-to-face or in formal contexts.
Cost:
AUD$2850 (including 10% GST), not including Certification Module
AUD$3795 (including 10% GST), including Certification Module
Payment in full is required by the 31st of May 2023. Registrations not paid by this date will be subject to cancellation unless contact has been made with the centre. We always seek to respond to extenuating circumstances in a kind and thoughtful way. If you are experiencing an emergency/crisis situation and cannot continue the course, please write to us direct.
A non-refundable deposit of AUD$1300 (deducted from the course fees) is required 1 week prior to the Level One Intensive. If you are unable to continue the course for any reason, it is possible to transfer your registration to the next year’s course. If you cannot transfer your registration, you can withdraw within one month of the course commencing and the full amount less the deposit will be refunded. For cancellations after this date there is only a limited refund available. It won’t be possible to receive a refund for the One Year Training Program for cancellations after the 31st of May 2023.
If you are enrolled in the optional Certification Module, an additional non-refundable deposit of AUD$230 (deducted from the course fees) is also due 1 week prior to the commencement of the Level One Intensive. Prior to the first Certification Module assignment being due, a refund minus the deposit is available. For cancellations after this date, please write to us direct. The Certification Module is designed to be completed alongside the One Year Training Program, and it won’t be possible to defer only the Certification Module to the next year.
